
Alex serves it up at the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival Kapalua Wine & Food Festival - 2009 The Plantation House Restaurant once again participated in the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival, which takes place each summer at Maui's Kapalua Resort. Master Sommelier Fred Dame returned to host the 28th year of this prestigious festival, which brings together chefs, sommeliers, and winemakers from around the world for four days of wine seminars, cooking demonstrations, and events such as The Grand Tasting and the Seafood Festival. Chef Alex was on hand at the popular Seafood Festival as a featured chef on June 14. Plantation House Featured on KGMB9 The Plantation House welcomed KGMB News reporter Ramsay Wharton to the restaurant for a feature that aired on the station's Sunrise show on June 9. This segment gave viewers a preview of good things to come to the 28th annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival. Chef Alex Stanislaw described dishes that would be served up during the Seafood Festival, while wine director Tony Guerrero shared comments about the restaurant's passion for its wine program with viewers. Supporting Sustainable Farming on Maui The Plantation House Restaurant is committed to supporting local farmers, as well as Maui's fishermen and other food & beverage suppliers in the community. The newest source for fresh local produce comes to Chef Alex from just down the road, as Kapalua Farms has opened up its 15-acre organic farm to chefs in the Kapalua Resort area. Wine Spectator Magazine Award of Excellence The Plantation House Restaurant has once again earned recognition from Wine Spectator Magazine. The August 2008 issue announced that The Plantation House received a 2008 Award of Excellence for its wine list, under the direction of Tony Guerrero, (pictured below), the restaurant's wine director and assistant manager. This award marks the ninth time that The Plantation House has achieved this distinction from Wine Spectator.
Maui Chefs Present The Plantation House continues to participate in this annual Taste of Lahaina event, which spotlights 12 of the island's top chefs in an elegant dinner at an outdoor, oceanfront location. Each annual dinner is festively- themed, and includes local entertainment. The 2008 event moved to a new venue - the Aloha Pavilion at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. Entertainment featured Grammy nominee Raiatea Helm, along with Jimmy Mac and the Kool Kats. The theme for the 2008 event, which took place on September 5, was "The Culinary Olympics: the Road to the Ritz." Mercedes-Benz Championship 2009 - Geoff Ogilvy Wins The Plantation House Restaurant at Kapalua once again played its part as host restaurant during the Mercedes-Benz PGA Golf Tournament's opening event from January 5-11. Daniel Chopra returned to the Plantation Course in Kapalua to defend his title and vie for a share of the $5.5 million purse. Australian Geoff Ogilvy, who previously had 4 PGA Tour wins, prevailed as this year's Mercedes-Benz Championship winner in Kapalua on January 11 with a six-stroke lead, beating out contenders Anthony Kim, Davis Love III, Sean O'Hair and Justin Leonard. Ogilvy was congratulated by a cheering crowd inside The Plantation House Restaurant after the event. Geoff Ogilvy, following his Mercedes-Benz Tournament win, has moved up to sixth place in world rankings for golf. Anthony Kim, a runner-up who tied with Davis Love III, has moved into the top ten for the first time, ranking at number nine after the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Golf Tournament.
Mercedes-Benz Championship - Kapalua Plantation Golf Course Giada De Laurentiis at The Plantation House Well-known Italian-American chef, Giada De Laurentiis, chose The Plantation House Restaurant to be one of her featured Maui restaurants for an episode of "Giada's Weekend Getaways" on The Food Network. The episode originally aired on February 24, 2008, featuring Chef Alex's preparations for Pistachio-crusted Papio, Pepper-seared Ahi and Bananas Foster.
Maui Calls The Plantation House continues to participate in this annual Maui event, which spotlights several of the island's top chefs in an elegant outdoor dinner gala at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. This fundraising event for the MACC also features wines from several wineries, island entertainment, and both live and silent auctions. Maui Calls in 2009 is scheduled for Friday, August 14. Honey of a Treat Chef Alex Stanislaw has been featured by the National Honey Board for his use of Hawaii's lehua blossom honey in one of his recipes. Due to the popularity of our "Come Join Our Table" wine dinner series, we will be continuing this event throughout 2009. Chef Alex and The Plantation House look forward to hosting these intimate wine dinners with new winemakers, as well as welcoming back those who have joined us in past years. Welcoming Levendi Winery to The Plantation House Restaurant Tapas & the Wines of Palmina Chef Alex paired up with James Wadsworth of Southern Wine & Spirits to bring together a fun and informal night of wine tasting at The Plantation House on April 17, 2009. During this casual "walk-around" wine dinner, guests sampled several selections from Steve & Chrystal's Palmina Wines, including their 2007 Botasea Rosato and their 2007 Santa Barbara County Barbera. The menu for this dinner included a selection of savory tapas. Levendi - A Toast to Life During the 2008 Kapalua Wine and Food Festival, Chef Alex paired up with winery partners Jim and Gus Gianulias, of Napa Valley's Levendi Winery, to host a wine dinner on June 28. Many know Gus Gianulias, also, as a Maui resident who owns Lahaina Cannery Mall. "Levendi," a toast to life in Greek, set the theme for this summer celebration. The The five-course meal included Levendi's very limited release Stagecoach Vineyard Syrah, paired with braised lamb shank. An Italian Feast in Late Spring The Plantation House Restaurant hosted an Italian wine dinner featuring the Amarone wines of Masi Agricola on May 20. Special guest Tony Apostolakos, U.S. Director of Masi Agricola S.p.A., was on hand to introduce the wines paired with each course. An Autumn Wine Dinner On November 16, 2007, The Plantation House Restaurant celebrated the wine and cuisine of the Beaujolais region of France with the help of "Maui Wine Guys" John Wise and Travis Takahashi. This five-course meal included pairings such as a 2006 Domaine Lapierre Morgon with braised beef cheeks and leeks roasted in olive oil. Kent Rosenblum Wine Dinner With the much-anticipated Kapalua Wine and Food Festival returning to Maui for its 26th year, The Plantation House Restaurant got into the spirit with the planning of two wine dinners in June, as part of its ongoing "Come Join Our Table" series. The restaurant welcomed winemaker Kent Rosenblum, of Rosenblum Cellars, on June 26. Zinfandel enthusiasts have nicknamed Rosenblum "The King of Zin," and Chef Alex's 5-course menu featured a pairing of "Annette's Reserve Zinfandel" with one of his dishes. Patz & Hall Wine Dinner In June of 2007, The Plantation House Restaurant welcomed winemaker Donald Patz, of Patz & Hall, for a 6-course wine dinner. Patz & Hall, well-known for their outstanding pinot noirs and chardonnays, offered up their 1999 Alder Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir for one pairing on Chef Alex's menu. "Maui Wine Guy" John Wise joined Donald Patz and Chef Alex for an enjoyable evening. Indulging in a Taste of Zin with Carol Shelton In February 2007, The Plantation House welcomed California winemaker Carol Shelton, who brought in a selection of exceptional zinfandels for pairing with a five-course menu created by Chef Alex. Among other pairings, Shelton's 2004 "Monga Zin" Old Vines Zinfandel complemented Chef Alex's spicy herb-crusted Hawaiian monchong.
